Health Benefits of the Acai Berry as an Anti-oxidant

Lately we've been hearing a lot in the media about the acai berry and the health benefits of acai. People are becoming more and more concerned about the health of their families and how to improve it through proper diet and nutrition.

It has now been proven that many of the health problems we face to today such as arthritis, premature aging, edema and leg swelling, hardening of the arteries and susceptibility to cancer are the result of inflammation caused by oxidation in the body.

Oxidation is the breakdown of healthy cells in the body and can be attributed to things such as pollution, cigarette smoke, chemicals, radiation, stress, lack of exercise and sleep.

We are now learning that one of the best ways to prevent disease is to slow down the oxidation process by eating a diet comprised of healthy foods that are high in anti-oxidants. Unfortunately most of these foods are fruits and vegetables, which many of us don't eat near enough of.

Foods are rated according to the level of anti-oxidants they contain and can be given an ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) test to determine a score.

Some common fruits and vegetables score the following:

  • Tomato - 60
  • Cherry - 100
  • Broccoli - 130
  • Raspberry - 210
  • Blueberry - 260

The Acai Berry Has the Highest ORAC Score of Any Fruit or Vegetable

Other foods that score well include pomegranate, cranberries, plums, and blackberries. But of all the foods ever tested the acai berry scores the highest at 1,027. According to the USDA the acai berry is 500-1000% higher in antioxidant activity than any other fruit or vegetable.

We've always been told it's best to consume as wide of a variety of fruits and vegetables as we can and to try and eat a rainbow of colors. That's the simple way to try and get a balanced diet but for a number of reasons can be quite difficult.

This is especially true in our household and for everyone in our family. So when our friend mentioned a fruit juice she was drinking we got very interested. She had fantastic results shortly after she started drinking it.

It's made from 19 fruits and berries that all score high on the ORAC scale for anti-oxidant benefits, with the primary ingredient being acai berry juice. By drinking just 2 ounces we get the same benefit as eating 7 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables as suggested in the Canada Food Guide. We've all been drinking the juice for over a year now.

There are many different products available that are made from the acai berry. Some are powdered, some are drinks made by different processes and with various other ingredients. We have only tried the one we get and are very happy with the product.

Unfortunately it can't be purchased in any stores that I can find. We've found other products that don't seem as good and are very expensive as well. We have our acai berry juice delivered right to our door by courier every month without fail and it still costs less than what we used to spend at Tim Horton's for coffee and doughnuts every day.
